ARK Inc.

ARK, a small land-based aquaculture device company, starts selling the new product REF-V1 and grouper aquaculture package

Integrated aquaculture using AR K-V1 + REF-V1 for micro aquaculture businesses

ARK Inc. (hereinafter, ARK) is pleased to announce that it has begun selling the "REF-V1" (hereinafter, REF-V1)*3, a new product following the "ARK-V1" (hereinafter, ARK-V1)*2, a completely closed recirculating land-based aquaculture system (CRAS) for micro aquaculture businesses*1, and will also begin offering grouper aquaculture packages*4 using ARK's product lineup.

With the global population growing, there are concerns that a "global protein crisis" will occur by 2050, in which the demand for edible protein will exceed the supply. In addition, in the 2020s, environmental issues, the spread of infectious diseases, and frequent conflicts around the world have led to increased interest in food security due to disruptions to the global supply chain. In order to solve these social issues in a sustainable way, ARK has set its mission as "Decentralization of Aquaculture" and has been working to research, develop, and popularize small-scale, decentralized land-based aquaculture systems.

We will start selling the refugium-type aquaculture device "REF-V1" (hereinafter referred to as REF-V1) capable of cultivating algae from Monday, February 19, 2024. Based on the results of joint research with the University of the Ryukyus, ARK has established a method of integrated aquaculture of groupers (Yaitohata, Grouper, etc.) and seaweeds (Kubilezuda, etc.) using ARK-V1 and REF-V1 (IMTA: Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture, hereinafter referred to as IMTA*5). REF-V1 can be operated directly connected to ARK-V1. The realization of IMTA using ARK products is an effective means of simultaneously solving the problems of improving the profitability of land-based aquaculture businesses and strengthening the filtration capacity of the equipment to increase the aquaculture density.

Groupers that can be farmed at the IMTA in ARK are designated as a new strategic aquaculture item in the "Comprehensive Strategy for the Growth and Industrialization of Aquaculture" enacted by the Fisheries Agency, and it is expected that the scale of farming will expand in the future. In addition, they grow quickly, are relatively easy to raise, and can be expected to fetch a high market price, making them a suitable fish species for entry into land-based aquaculture.

In conjunction with the release of the REF-V1, we will begin a service on Monday, February 19, 2024, that packages the materials and growth know-how required for aquaculture, such as for grouper fry, and provides this service to micro aquaculture businesses. This will enable businesses without aquaculture know-how to enter land-based aquaculture in a short period of time.

In commemoration of the launch of the REF-V1 and grouper farming package, we will also be running a campaign*6 offering a 20% discount on the initial installation costs for the first three units.

We will be exhibiting at the Seafood Show Osaka to be held from February 21st to 22nd, 2024 to display the above package outline and hold business meetings, so please feel free to contact us or stop by.

What is a micro aquaculture business?

A small-scale land-based aquaculture business that utilizes the small-scale, distributed land-based aquaculture system ARK. It was inspired by the "microbreweries" that began in the UK in the 1970s. The high-quality, diverse beer made by small-scale producers created demand as "craft beer," and the market quickly expanded, spreading to various related businesses. The spread of small-scale brewing equipment spurred industrialization. For example, by using locally grown agricultural products and produce in the aquaculture process, original local fish and private brand products can be produced. By processing, distributing, and cooking these, new businesses can be created based on new specialty products.

About IMTA*5

A complex aquaculture method that can obtain multiple outputs (products) from a single input (feed) and a shared energy source (heat and light). This system improves water quality in various ways while increasing yields (sales).

About the campaign*6

The conditions for application are limited to simultaneous purchase of ARK-V1 and REF-V1. The applicable period is for businesses that purchase from the date of this announcement until the end of May 2024.

ARK Inc.

ARK's mission is to "democratize aquaculture" and to provide a system that allows "anyone to do aquaculture anywhere." ARK develops and sells small, distributed closed recirculating land-based aquaculture systems called "ARK" (Closed Recirculating Aquaculture System). Unlike existing large-scale aquaculture systems, distributed aquaculture can be started with small-scale investment and operation. In addition, by utilizing renewable energy, it is possible to operate off-grid, while at the same time significantly reducing energy costs and environmental impact. In addition to these hardware, ARK provides the remote management application "STARBOARD BY ARK" required for aquaculture business, as well as materials, seeds, and breeding know-how.
